Behind every nap, every bedtime, every inexplicable waking at 2am, two biological forces are at work. Understanding them does not make infant sleep simple — nothing does — but it does make it legible. And legible is considerably easier to navigate than chaotic.
Force one: sleep pressure
Sleep pressure, also called sleep homeostasis or Process S, is the drive to sleep that builds the longer you are awake. It is driven primarily by adenosine, a chemical that accumulates in the brain during wakefulness and is cleared during sleep. The longer you are awake, the more adenosine accumulates, the higher the sleep pressure, and the stronger the drive to sleep.
In adults, adenosine is what makes you feel increasingly tired as the day progresses. It is also what caffeine blocks — caffeine does not give you energy, it temporarily prevents adenosine from binding to its receptors, masking the sleep pressure you have built.
In babies, sleep pressure builds much faster than in adults. This is why wake windows are short — particularly in young babies — and why an overtired baby is so difficult to settle. By the time they have exceeded their comfortable wake window, adenosine levels are high, cortisol has been recruited as a compensatory measure, and the nervous system is in a state that is both exhausted and activated simultaneously. That is the overtired paradox, and it is entirely chemical.
Wake windows are not arbitrary
The concept of wake windows — the period of wakefulness a baby can comfortably sustain before needing to sleep again — is grounded in sleep pressure biology. Catching the sleep window before adenosine accumulation triggers a cortisol spike is one of the highest-leverage things you can do for infant sleep.
Approximate wake windows by age:
- Newborn to 6 weeks: 45 to 60 minutes
- 6 to 12 weeks: 60 to 90 minutes
- 3 to 4 months: 75 to 120 minutes
- 5 to 6 months: 2 to 2.5 hours
- 7 to 9 months: 2.5 to 3.5 hours
- 10 to 12 months: 3 to 4 hours
These are ranges, not rules. Every baby's nervous system is individual, and the most accurate wake window data comes from observing your own baby's sleepy cues rather than watching the clock.
Force two: melatonin and the circadian rhythm
The second force is the circadian rhythm — the 24-hour biological clock that governs the timing of sleep and wakefulness. The circadian system is regulated primarily by light and dark, and its primary output relevant to sleep is melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness that signals to the body that it is time to sleep.
Unlike sleep pressure, which is present from birth, the circadian rhythm is not fully established in newborns. Melatonin production is minimal and irregular in the first weeks of life — which is a significant part of why newborn sleep has no discernible day-night pattern. The circadian rhythm develops gradually over the first three to six months, guided by environmental cues including light exposure, feeding timing, and the rhythms of the caregiving relationship.
Morning light is one of the most powerful tools available for anchoring the circadian rhythm. Exposure to natural light in the first hour after waking tells the biological clock where the day begins, which influences when melatonin rises in the evening and when the body is primed for sleep.
How the two forces interact
Sleep pressure and the circadian rhythm work together to produce the ideal conditions for sleep. When both are aligned — when sleep pressure is appropriately high and melatonin is rising — settling is easier, sleep is deeper, and overnight sleep is more consolidated. When they are misaligned — when a baby naps too late and arrives at bedtime with insufficient sleep pressure, or when bedtime is pushed past the melatonin window — settling is harder and sleep is lighter.
Much of what gentle sleep consulting does is find the schedule and environment that allows these two forces to work together rather than against each other. No amount of settling technique makes up for biology that is working against you. And when biology is working with you, even imperfect settling usually results in sleep.
